In low-seismic regions, structural engineers balance performance, efficiency, and constructability while meeting code requirements. Even where seismic demands are lower, thoughtful detailing and an understanding of masonry behavior can make the difference between a structure that merely meets minimums and one that performs reliably for decades.

Through practical examples, you’ll learn how to interpret and apply Seismic Design Categories (SDC A, B, and C), identify when seismic detailing is required, and avoid common pitfalls in wall anchorage and diaphragm connections. We’ll also review key code provisions, boundary conditions, and early-process design decisions, including wall thickness, reinforcement spacing, and connection detailing.

Gain practical insight into designing masonry buildings that are strong, economical, and ready whenever nature shakes things up.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify seismic detailing provisions for low-seismic masonry structures under TMS 402/602 and related standards.
  • Examine unreinforced and reinforced masonry under low levels of seismic loading, safeguarding structural integrity.
  • Discuss material and layout choices that enhance efficiency and performance without compromising safety.
  • Evaluate how diaphragm-to-wall anchorage and wall reinforcement detailing affect building performance during moderate seismic events.

About the Speaker:
Sam Rubenzer, PE, SE
Structural Engineer, Forse Consulting

Sam started FORSE in 2010, were he works as a delegated designer for other structural engineers on designs involving steel, concrete, PT concrete, masonry, and wood construction. He often speaks on the topics of software use and best practices in masonry design.
Sam has over 20 years of experience and is a licensed structural engineer (SE) and a professional engineer (PE) in many of the Midwestern states. He has also been a consultant to IMI for the past 10 years.
