Failures in adhered masonry veneer assemblies have surfaced in recent years. While some of these issues stem from unskilled installation practices, moisture intrusion remains a significant contributing factor. Fortunately, there are proven strategies to design adhered masonry veneer walls that are more resilient, including the incorporation of dedicated drainage systems. Historically, drainage spaces and other moisture-management components have not been standard in adhered veneer construction. However, integrating these features into all designs can significantly improve the system’s ability to handle moisture. Equally important is ensuring proper installation: training and certification for craftworkers, coupled with attentive inspection during construction, are critical to overcoming the stigma surrounding these systems and ensuring long-term performance.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review and apply adhered veneer building code requirements to current and future projects.
  • Examine the components of a complete adhered veneer drainage wall system, including drainage spaces, weather-resistive barriers, and flashing, and understand how each contributes to moisture control.
  • Evaluate additional design features, such as ventilation and movement joint spacing, and their impact on overall wall performance.
  • Understand the importance of training and certification for craftworkers to ensure adhered veneer systems are installed correctly and perform as intended.
