Join us to examine how masonry wall systems accommodate movement through expansion, contraction, and deflection. Gain insight into the behavior of different masonry materials, including brick, block, and stone, and how structural and veneer systems respond to temperature, moisture, and load effects. Learn practical detailing strategies that clarify how movement joints function within structural masonry and what coordination is needed between design and construction teams. You’ll understand how proper joint placement and detailing contribute to the performance, longevity, and resilience of masonry buildings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the role of movement joints in maintaining structural integrity and durability.
  • Identify common causes of movement in masonry systems that affect occupant safety.
  • Differentiate between movement joint types in structural masonry and architectural veneer applications to ensure code compliance and performance.
  • Investigate who is responsible for locating movement joints per the IBC/TMS 402/602 building code.
